UFC Star Jorge Masvidal Announces Retirement Following Fourth Consecutive Defeat

After suffering a lopsided loss to Gilbert Burns in the co-main event of UFC 287, legendary UFC fighter Jorge Masvidal announced his retirement from the sport. His other three losses were to the top welterweights in the division, making this his fourth straight loss. Masvidal had lost two title-challenge bouts to Kamaru Usman, as well as a fight against Colby Covington in March of last year that was named fight of the night.

Masvidal, who started his career as a street fighter by following in the footsteps of the famous Kimbo Slice, praised his city in his farewell speech. Before making his UFC debut in 2013, he later participated in Bellator and Strikeforce competitions. Masvidal revealed that he no longer felt the same when he entered the Octagon after 35 victories and 17 defeats in his professional career.

Masvidal's brash comments and run-ins outside the Octagon defined his career. He made his debut in 2019 by knocking out Darren Till in the second round in London. This victory marked the beginning of a three-fight winning streak that also featured victories over two more famous UFC competitors. Masvidal defeated Ben Askren in the fastest victory in UFC history, taking just five seconds to do so. Masvidal defeated Nate Diaz via TKO in his subsequent match, earning the novelty BMF championship in November 2019.

The end of Masvidal's UFC career, which had its share of highs and lows, is marked by his retirement. He emphasized his love for the sport and his gratitude for the chances it had given him despite the problems. Masvidal may now reflect on a lengthy and fruitful career as a multimillionaire who realized his aspirations after retiring.
